Danish Word Order
Danish sentence structure is close to English in many ways, but there is one important rule you need to learn early: the V2 rule.
The V2 Rule
In Danish main clauses, the finite verb is always in position 2. This is called the V2 rule and it applies to every statement you make.
Position 1
Subject
Position 2
Verb
Position 3+
Rest
Examples
Jeg spiser et æble.
I eat an apple.
Hun læser en bog.
She reads a book.
Vi laver mad.
We make food.
Key takeaway
For simple sentences, Danish word order looks just like English: Subject – Verb – Object. The verb is always second. This pattern covers a huge number of everyday sentences.
